Hey guys! My name is Karen, and I was lucky enough to be a student of Class 5 at ARROJO Cosmetology School.  I moved from Kentucky to NYC in November 2009 to pursue my dream of a career in the beauty industry. ARROJO Cosmetology School was my ticket to think outside the box. Armed with a solid education,I transformed from a shy student to a confident assistant to a successful stylist in less than a year. ARROJO matched me up with the fun and funky Revolver Salon at Ricky’s NYC, and for 2 years I balanced my own clientele on the Upper West Side with a healthy dose of freelance work that allowed me to showcase my creativity in awesome ways - photo shoots for product lines, commercials posted on Facebook, indie artist music videos and shows in New York Fashion Week.

They say home is where the heart is, and when I got the chance to come back to ARROJO as their new Admissions Director, I knew I was coming back home.  The great thing about an ARROJO education is that it prepares you for a life-long career in the industry, and the skill set I developed here as a student goes beyond learning how to cut, color and style hair - I’m utilizing business and communication skills that I developed here, too.  ARROJO Cosmetology School was the best investment I’ve ever made for my future, and as a graduate, I am so excited to share my experience with future students!

The next full-time class start date at ARROJO Cosmetology is June 11^th, 2012. And after tickling the schedules, we are delighted to announce that Nick Arrojowill be teaching one session a week for the entire duration of the curriculum. ARROJO cosmetology: Inspirational, Career-Shaping Education

The students from ARROJO Cosmetology Class 15 are now, all-star beauty school graduates, and their Graduation Show was a rip-roaring success!

It didn’t happen over night. During the seven-month curriculum, undergraduates study and scrutinize everything from health and safety to client consultations to beauty product knowledge and usage to makeup and styling to the theory and practice of contemporary hairstyling to advanced techniques in color and cut.

Many of the skills our students learn go beyond State Board requirements, giving them a jump on the competition, so they can start their careers with the  high-level techniques that defines our modern and creative approach to precision-based hairstyling.

The Graduation Party & Presentation is the students’ apotheosis of the hard study, practice, and practical application of the Cosmetology Curriculum.

Each student presents one complete head-to-toe look, inclusive of overall concept or theme, styling and makeup, haircut, color, and style. Sharing newfound knowledge, creativity, and skill it is time and chance for each student to shine.

What was the theme for Class 15? Yin and Yang.

For the class graduation speech, Caitlin explained the theme in relation to their class experience

“Our class represents Yin and Yang, because although we come from different backgrounds, faiths, and span a variety of ages, we came together as a class and used our opposing characteristics to compliment each other and become one cohesive unit.”

With an audience of family and friends, fellow students and staff, it was time for the show. Everything - the smooth and streamlined runway show, the sense of style and individuality in each look, the creativity and precision of every cut and color and style, the overall concepts and themes - wowed the crowd, and belied that seven short months ago, these Graduates never knew how to hold a comb.

As the evening drew to a close, each student was presented with their hard-earned Graduation Certificate. While three over-achieving individuals received $350 Advanced Academy Gift Certificates for the Highest Grade Point Average, Highest Retail Services, and Best Attendance.

By this time, applause was rapturous and tears were in the eyes of many students and family and staff, so it was left to Nick Arrojo to deliver the final inspirational speech:

“This is the beginning, not the end. Now your careers start for real. Wherever you go, whatever dreams and ambitions you have, remember that education is the foundation of a lasting, prosperous, and rewarding career. Work hard, stay inspired, think big, vow to never stop learning - and all your dreams will come true,” he said.

Now begins a bright and brilliant future for fifteen stylists who put passion and inspiration into everything they do.

Olivia from Class 4:

Olivia moved from Albany to New York two weeks before her 19^th birthday. This is her advice on moving to the City:

1) Check out the neighborhood you’re moving to during the day and at night to make sure you feel comfortable there.

2) Look into renters insurance. It’s really cheap and protects all your expensive things.

3) Some streets require permits to park a moving truck while you’re moving in, they will

ticket you in a heartbeat!

4) Make sure to budget so you know what you can spend on rent every month. You don’t want to get stuck paying more than you can afford.

“I was part of class 4, and graduated in April 2010. I did research on apartments to get an idea of what was out there and what kind of prices to expect, but didn’t start seriously looking until a month before the move. Then I took day trips to the city and looked at as many places as I could in one day. I finally realized how quickly apartments get rented in the city and picked up one I loved in the Upper East Side.”

Meg from Class 11:

Meg moved to New York from Ohio when she was 22. Here’s her advice for relocating to the big apple:

1)    Get to know the area and get excited by following a few local blogs and/or buy a new travel book.

“Moving to New York City is exciting. I remember prior to moving to the city, I started following a few bloggers who lived in Williamsburg. I was so excited when I moved here, to finally explore a place I felt like I knew a little about.”

2)    Having some regular spots/make New York smaller:

“The quicker you get into a routine the easier the adjustment will be. Whether that means becoming a regular at a local coffee shop or joining a gym etc…”

3)    Share with your new friends.

“You’ll find to that cosmetology school is a great way to make new friends. Since your class will (most likely) be a mix of locals, new-to-towners, and people who’ve been in the city for a while, they will become a great source of “information” for you. I was constantly picking everyone’s brains for places to eat, shop, and things to do!

Our first Alumni featured: Victoria Ducane from Class 8

Victoria came to us in the summer of 2010, bright-eyed and eager to dive head-first into her new career in the beauty industry. She completed our 7-month Cosmetology course and continued on as an ARROJO Studio Apprentice. We caught up with Victoria this week to see how her career has taken off, and she had a lot to gush about:

“I’m a girl who’s passionate about people and making a difference in how people look at themselves and of course, how they feel. I went to ARROJO Cosmetology School and it completely changed my life! I’ve had such an amazing experience at ARROJO thus far. I’ve been able to so some amazing things with ARROJO Studio, like work fashion week, be a part of photo shoots, and travel ”
