Recently, school educator Pia Vivas challenged her class to an editorial styling project inspired by a collection on the media network, PSFK. The original portrait series, captured by photographer Roman Sakovich, is called ‘Half’ and features two combined images of the same person, drawing attention to how facial appearance, clothes and demeanor can be changed through the use of hair, makeup, styling, and lighting.

A real life editorial is an initiative that goes above and beyond the necessities of any State curriculum, yet the progressive project sits well with our culture. “We want to give our students a well-rounded, inspirational, and career-shaping education,” explains Pia. “Exposing students to new and exciting elements of the industry gives everyone the best chance to find their desired career path, and it teaches creative skills that go beyond the fundamentals.”

With this in mind, educators are encouraged to seek innovative ways to connect students’ classroom experience to the real world. Pia pushed the envelope and galvanized students to do the same. “At first, the project seemed a little over the top to the students and they didn’t easily trust the direction,” says Pia. “Soon, however, as they started to see their work develop, they really got into the details and began working as a team. This was a great way for the students to explore another side of editorial hair styling, makeup and photography.”

Working tirelessly to pull it all together, the images in the slideshow reflect the student’s vision and skill. One model represents a lion and a cub, the other represents urban and country lifestyles.
