The members of Part Time Class 3 put their professionalism and creativity on display in an innovative Graduation Presentation at ARROJO Cosmetology School.
To celebrate the completion of a 12-month cosmetology education, the four members of the class handed out cinema tickets, welcoming their guests to a “Night at the Movies.” Our space was transformed into a movie theater complete with popcorn and a projector, and the audience was treated to retro hair product commercials and classic Technicolor trailers before the main presentation began. In a nod to Quentin Tarantino, each student styled a model in a head-to-toe look inspired by characters featured in Kill Bill, Inglorious Basterds, and Pulp Fiction.
Twelve months previous, these students didn’t know the right way to hold a comb. But through guidance from their main educator, Pia Vivas, and a year of study and practice of the key elements of cosmetology, they transformed from students to professionals.
Pia shared her thoughts on what made this class special:
“This class has been about goals from the beginning. They’ve accomplished quite a lot already. They immediately applied the information we gave them and ran with it. We discussed ways to begin working in editorial, and they took it upon themselves to schedule test photo shoots. They approached top editorial artists and agencies to begin assisting. Their work, individually and as a team, has already appeared in international magazines, WWD Online and other publications.
They took full advantage of the opportunities we gave them, including styling hair during New York City’s Fashion’s Night Out, braiding hair for the Free People clothing store, and styling hair at Skating with the Stars at Chelsea Piers. It’s evident by the quality of their graduation presentation that they have been hard at work developing their skills, in and out of the classroom.”
It might sound easy, but it wasn’t. As their main educator, I saw them struggle to understand, to make their hands create the vision in their mind, and to juggle daytime jobs and responsibilities with nighttime classes…all these things could have distracted them from accomplishing their goals. Yet here they are. They made a goal to graduate and they did it.
They are a great example of the level of education that we aim provide to our students in our mission to raise the standards in our industry. There is no doubt that these students will do exactly that they minute they begin their careers. In my mind, they already have.”
