We couldn’t be prouder of ARROJO Cosmetology School graduate, Amy Gifford.  She followed her heart and worked hard to become a licensed cosmetologist.  Now she enjoys a lucrative career at a top salon in the city. Read on to find out how Amy skyrocketed to success…

What inspired you to join the beauty industry?

I was compelled to switch my career in architecture to hair by my own hair stylist, Rachel Gray, from Laicale Salon, SoHo.  She is a great mentor and I’m so grateful for her support.

How did you choose ARROJO cosmetology school?

When I first started looking at schools, my career change was still a whimsical idea.  I wanted to explore my options. This school had everything I was looking for - a devoted staff, an intricate and thorough curriculum, functional student salon spaces, and access to Nick Arrojo and his stylists.  From the second I stepped through the door, my “whimsical” career was more than a possibility — it became a viable career path and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I knew it was the place for me.

What stands out about your time here?

Nick committed to teaching one session a week for my class. I still remind myself of the many inspirational conversations he had with us.  Also, the influence and knowledge from each educator stands out.  They care very deeply about every student.

Any advice for current and prospective students?

You’re learning from the absolute top of the industry.  Be present and aware.  There is nothing more important than showing up on time, bringing your best self, and absorbing everything you can.

Where are you working now?

I’m a Senior Color Assistant at Serge Normant for John Frieda in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District.  I have the privilege of working with and learning from Gina Gilbert, one of the top colorists in the nation.  We regularly work with celebrity clients, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Julianne Moore, Glenn Close, Donna Karan, and more.

Before joining the team at Serge Normant, I had several career-shaping freelance opportunities.  I was hired as a hair and makeup artist and wardrobe stylist for a photo shoot with The Lumineers.  Little did I know that the band would later be nominated for a Grammy.

I feel blessed. ARROJO cosmetology nurtured my dreams and gave me the chance to pursue a career path that was once only a “What If?” Now it’s a wonderful life!
